After FIVE YEARS of OCCUPATION and DESTRUCTION in Iraq, after the MASSACRE of OVER ONE MILLION IRAQIS since March 2003, where are the anti-war and anti-occupation demonstrators in Britain and the U.S.???

The so-called “democrats” and “freedom loving” people organize protests in London, San Francisco, etc ... against “China’s lies” and the Chinese government's “atrocities” committed in Tibet but remain silent while THEIR OWN GOVERNMENTS, continue to commit GENOCIDE IN IRAQ!


It's high time they get their priorities right. The struggle for JUSTICE and HUMAN RIGHTS begins at home!

This is a presentation that I delivered to the conference on "The Muslim World and the West: Emerging Avenues for Convergence" hosted by the International Center for Contemporary Middle East Studies, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada during March 28-30 2008:

· A documented list of at least 345 teachers and professors from universities across Iraq, representing all academic disciplines, have been killed in a systematic campaign of assassinations. The Iraqi Interior Ministry has recently announced that it has detained more than 6000 suspects charged with the assassination of academics and scientists (in Arabic), 600 of whom have been sentenced to death, with one suspect alone who has admitted to killing 60 of the above. Yet, the Iraqi Interior Ministry provides no explanation on the affiliations of these prisoners nor of their instigators and who is behind them.

· It is estimated that 2,000 Iraqi doctors have been killed and half of the 34,000 doctors registered in 2003 have left the country. Of Iraq’s 180 large hospitals, 90 per cent lack essential resources. Under the control of Moqtada Al-Sadr, the Ministry of Health has plummeted into corruption, while hospitals have been transformed into secret detention centres where torture and murder are endemic at the hands of death squads.

· The Iraqi Interior Ministry has admitted that more than 9000 civil servants (in Arabic), including high ranking staff in the prime minister’s office (in Arabic), have provided purchased fake university degrees.

· More than 800,000 schoolchildren (22 per cent) have stopped attending primary school and only half of those who complete primary school continue their education. More than 220,000 refugee Iraqi children in neighbouring countries are denied their right to education.

· All public services have collapsed. Already in 2006, 40 per cent of skilled Iraqi personnel had left the country.

What should legitimately and persistently be considered is what does the U.S. owe Iraq for over a million dead and ten times that number wounded or otherwise devastated in five years of Bush's unrelenting bloodletting? And for the 5,000,000 people who have been uprooted and displaced from their homes, half of them forced to flee their homeland, 65% of them women and children, 80% of the children less than 12 years of age?"

Sorrows of a Nation with ONE MILLION DEAD

The Association of Muslim Scholars' Al Basaer newspaper carried an editorial Wednesday with the headline "Sorrows of a nation with 1 million dead."The editorial said that when the announcement of a million Iraqis dead since the beginning of the occupation in 2003 was released, there was no outrage in the Arab world and the news passed as normal.


It added that the Arab world considered the news of 1 million dead as the "normality of life in Iraq."

"The Arabic media was less interested by the news on Iraq as the uprising of the blockaded Palestinians in Gaza is seemingly more important," it said.


It added that the interest in daily armed clashes and attacks garnered more attention than major changes in societies and the influence of these changes on people's lives -- "events increasingly causing agony and struggle for the people of Iraq," it said.


It said that the Algerian revolution ended with 1 million martyrs, Algiers entered history and was able to achieve its goal of ending the occupation and announcing independence."One million Iraqis died in five years. … Still there is no glimmer of light giving us hope the occupier will leave our country even in the long term," the paper said.


It added that the death of 1 million Iraqis was announced last month by Human Rights Watch, which documented the deaths of 1,033,000 Iraqis between 2003 and 2007. "This report means that the situation in the agonized Iraq is in continuous deterioration as 200,000 people have died each year since the invasion in 2003," it said.


Mehdi al-Fahdawi, the editorial writer, said, "Before the announcement of the casualty report, I had the chance to meet with Iraqi resistance leaderships and they noted that the Arab world gave up the Iraqi matter and handed it over to the Americans."


"The Arabs merely watching what is taking place in Iraq as if watching a crime or violent movie on a screen, forgetting this shredded country named Iraq is part of the Arab nation and what happens to it today, happens to other Arab countries tomorrow," the paper said.


The editorial added that the Arab world is involved with what is happening in Palestine, which is a natural and justified reaction, but that it is unacceptable the entire world turn their backs on the situation in Iraq. "If people face death in Gaza, people in Iraq die everyday. If they have not enough electricity, Iraqis have no electricity or fuel or water for more than one hour every day. The barriers in the Occupied Territories in Palestine are similar to those in Baghdad," the editorial said.


It added that the U.S. influence on the Arab countries made the latter support the American- Israeli blockade on Gaza and align with the government in Ramallah in its struggle against the elected government in the Gaza Strip.


The Saudi-based newspaper concluded that the increase of the U.S. role in the Arab world encourages their governments to reduce their participation in helping the people of Iraq. "Lines have interfered with the map of the Iraqi resistance, resulting in its defacement and giving it a bad reputation to the point we no more know who is lined with the Iraqi people and who is against them, or who is with the Americans and who disagrees with them," it said.


Al Basaer said there are groups on the ground in Iraq that coordinate among themselves to fight U.S. forces and consider them their main enemy.

Saudi Shi'ites oppose plans to settle Sunnis (Reuters.18.2.2007)

"Saudi Shi'ites have asked the authorities to scrap plans to settle Sunni Muslim Yemenis in southern Saudi Arabia to change the demographic balance in an area where they are the majority..."Excuse but what is this nonsense ? Since when Shi'ism and Sunnism have become a race or an ethnicity that might change the demographic balance in any one area ?

If I recall correctly, both "sects" are MUSLIMS and in this particular case ARABS.And let me remind the reader that Ahl Al-Bayt, i.e Al Hussein, Hassan, Fatimah al Zahra, and Ali - personages venerated by the Shia, happen to be next of kin and blood relatives of the Prophet Muhammad and they all came from Najd/Hijaz and not Qum.

I guess the Iranian "Professor" Vali Nasr famous for his Shia Revival and who acted as an advisor to Bush on Sectarianism in Iraq, as well as the other "Professor" by the name of Chomsky who has been harping on how much the Shia have been oppressed in Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia -- must be very elated by now.

Their theories have been tested and applied by none other than the White House.
