U.S. forces committed to train Peshmerga – Talabani

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said that U.S. forces have made a commitment to train Peshmerga (Kurdish) forces after unifying them. "Negotiations are underway with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to form two military divisions in Kurdistan," Talabani said on Wednesday from his hometown, Sulaimaniya.
He referred to the importance of upcoming parliamentary election in Iraq and what he described as "Kurdish leadership in Baghdad."

Anti-Kurdish militia demonstrations in Iraq’s Mosul

Thousands of students went to the streets in the northern city of Mosul protesting the presence of Kurdish militia fighters in their city.
The students, mainly from secondary and high schools, carried placards denouncing the militias and demanding their immediate withdrawal from Mosul."The protesters shouted slogans against peshmerga fighters and asked the government to have them replaced by Iraqi troops," a provincial sources told the newspaper on condition that his name not be revealed.
Peshmerga is the local name for the Kurdish militias thousands of which were deployed in Mosul, a predominantly Arab city, shortly after the 2003-U.S. invasion.
Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, is one of the most restive places in the country. Attacks, particularly on its ethnic and religious minorities, have escalated recently.
Despite the killings and the uprooting of thousands of people, the government has failed to bring any individuals or groups to justice.The inhabitants blame the Kurdish militias for the unrest but Kurdish leaders categorically deny the accusations.What prompted the latest demonstrations was the close coordination the militias have with U.S. occupation troops.Most of Mosul inhabitants disdain U.S. troops and see them as invaders and occupiers.
U.S. military commanders were reported to have held a ceremony in Aski Mosul, north of the city, in which they rewarded several Kurdish militia leaders and conferred medals on them.
This particular ceremony was reported to have sparked the latest demonstrations.

Arab bloc in Kirkuk threatens to boycott council

The Arab bloc at the Kirkuk Provincial Council threatened Thursday to boycott if an Iraqi-peshmarga-U.S. protection force is formed.
The bloc said in a release that it rejects the idea that such a force will be responsible for Kirkuk’s security.
“We, the representatives of Arabs at the Kirkuk Provincial Council, will boycott the sessions to express our rejection of this proposal,” said the release received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
“We will be committed to the boycott until the proposal is canceled,” it said.
The legal and constitutional status of Kirkuk imposes a special means to deal carefully with any issue related to the city, according to the bloc.
“All sides should cooperate to make the proper decisions, and any provocative step would heavily damage security in Kirkuk,” the release said.
The statement pointed out that the proposal to form the combined force violates the Iraqi constitution and the Iraq-U.S. long-term security pact.
The oil-rich Kirkuk, a city of mixed Arab, Turkmen and Kurdish population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
