AL-SADR FOLLOWERS QUIT CABINET OVER US PRESENCE

Six Ministers, followers of Moqtada Al-Sadr resigned yesterday after PM Maliki refused to fix date for the withdrawal of foreign troops. Accusing Mr Maliki of "ignoring the will of the people" after last week's huge protest rally in Najaf calling for US forces to leave.

The ministers told a press conference in Baghdad they were giving up their cabinet posts to free their powerful parliamentary bloc to campaign for a firm date for the withdrawal of foreign troops.

ETHNIC DISCRIMINATION AGAINST THE TURKMENS IN TEL AFER

A NEW BOOK : "TURKMEN OF IRAQ"

A new book “Turkmen of Iraq” has been published by Mofak Salman Kerkuklu

The Author

Mofak Salman Kerkuklu graduated in England with a BSc Honours in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Oxford Brookes University and completed MSc’s in both Medical Electronic and Physics at London University and a MSc in Computing Science and Information Technology at South Bank University. He is also a qualified Charter Engineer from the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. Mr. Mofak Salman is an author of a book “ Brief History of Iraqi Turkmen”. He is the Turkmeneli Party representative for both the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom. He has written a large number of articles that were published in various newspapers.

Purpose and Scope

This book was written with two clear objectives. Firstly, to make an assessment of the current position of Turkmen in Iraq, and secondly, to draw the world’s attention to the situation of the Turkmen. This book would not have been written without the support of Turkmen all over the world.

I wish to reveal to the world the political situation and suffering of the Iraqi Turkmen under the Iraqi regime, and to expose Iraqi Kurdish bandits and reveal their premeditated plan to change the demography of the Turkmen-populated area. I would like to dedicate this book to every Turkmen who has been detained in Iraqi prisons; to Turkmen who died under torture in Iraqi prisons; to all Turkmen whose sons and daughters were executed by the Iraqi regime; to all Turkmen who fought and died without seeing a free Turkmen homeland; and to the Turkmen City of Kerkuk, which is a bastion of cultural and political life for the Turkmen resisting the Kurdish occupation.

Therefore, my first and foremost sincere thanks are to Mr. Habib Hurmuzlu and Mr. Ercument Okcu, Global Strategic Institute. In addition, I would like to extend and express my sincere thanks to Mrs. Merry Fitzgerald and Mr. Stephen Hinch. I would also like to thank my family and, last but not least, my thanks go to my martyred brother, surgeon Dr. Bruhn Mohammed Salman Kerkuklu, who motivated and encouraged me from childhood to fight for the Turkmen cause in the Turkmeneli.

The book contains a very significant number of official documents that were obtained from the Iraqi secret service, Iraqi security forces, official letters issued by the government, governmental letters, forged documents issued by the Kurdish militia and others useful documents showing the oppression, arrest , imprisonment and the execution of the Turkmen. The book is very useful for showing the truth and facts about the city of Kerkuk and also revealing to the world the oppression of the Turkmen by the Kurdish militia after the occupation of Iraq moreover the book would be resourceful to the researchers whom are interested in studying the political situation of Iraq.

The book contains a significant number of photos showing the involvement of both Kurdish militia in changing the demography of the Turkmen city of Kerkuk and photos showing the co-operation of the Kurdish militia with the previous regime and the Israeli officials. However the majority of the enclosed documents are written in Arabic and they have been translated to English, also there are number of documents that are enclosed with the book written in English.

The book also describes

The current situation of the Turkmen in Turkmeneli
After the occupation of Iraq, the Turkmen, Arabs and Chaldo Assyrians had high expectations of the interim administration established after April 9, 2003. The Turkmen expected to see democracy, fairness, an end to discrimination, the right to self- determination and an end to violence. Unfortunately, the opposite has occurred in particular concerning the Iraqi Turkmen.

Presently the Turkmen have been undergoing Kurdization campaigns by the Kurds in Turkmeneli in an often more brutal fashion than carried out on Kurds by Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi Kurds are attempting by various methods to eliminate Turkmen identity especially from Kerkuk City in order to dilute them into Kurdish society.
Despite the fact that the Turkmen had been given assurances by the US forces that the Kurdish militia would not be allowed to enter Kerkuk and Mosul, the Kurdish onslaught did take place.

During the occupation of Kerkuk, the Kurds burnt the Registry Office and the land deeds for the Turkmen have been taken from the Registry Office intentionally and this makes it difficult for the Turkmen to establish the original inhabitants of the province. This orchestrated looting was a purposeful act meant to remove all official evidence proving the Turkmen presence in Kerkuk.

Iraqi Property Claims Commission

However, in April 2004, the Americans created the Iraqi Property Claims Commission to rule on restitution. By the end of 2004, the commission had received 10,044 claims from Kerkuk province. The commission’s statistics show that judges have come to a decision only on 25 cases. The head of the commission said in an interview that only two judges, both Kurds, were working on cases in Kerkuk. The commission has been unable to assign more judges because Kurdish political parties insist that only Kurds review the claims, which limits the number of qualified people.

ERASING HISTORY

April 14, 2007

Who is erasing Iraq's history? A visitor only has to be in the country minute's before someone informs them: 'We are the cradle of civilisation' and launches in to the pride and passion of historical jewels and archaeological wonders stretching back seemingly beyond time. They are not Sunni, Shia, Christian, Turkoman, Yazidi jewels, they are Mesopotamia’s and have been proudly nurtured since the mists of time.

Samarra's great golden domes, destroyed on 22nd February last year, a Shia shrine in a largely Sunni city, had been tended and protected by residents for centuries. The southern holy cities of Najaf and Kerbala were places where Iraqis of all or no religion, demanded to take visitors. Before the invasion it was unthinkable to even wonder whether a host, driver, shopkeeper was of a particular religion, sect. They were Iraqis, intermarried, living mostly side by side.

From the day all Iraq was reduced to an intensive care unit (9th April 2003) 'mission accomplished', patient critical, suddenly there were 'Sunni'.'Shia', 'tribes',in the US and UK lexicon. They were a people 'unable yet to take responsibility for their country' (which they had managed pretty imaginatively even under the thirteen years of crippling sanctions, which will forever be former weak willed UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's murderous legacy for not being able to stand up to US/UK pressure.)

So having presented a divided, backward nation to the world, why not show them as such - and 'divide and rule' and sew doubt where none had existed and demolish all that is cohesive: history itself? A bit of modern - by Iraq standards - history destroyed this week is the Al Sarafiya Bridge, built by the British in another Mesopotamian adventure, in the early 1900's. Unlike many of Iraq's wondrous bridges spanning the Tigris and the Euphrates, it survived the 1991 carpet bombing, but not now the invasion.

Whilst accounts differ, a truck bomb (and there are plenty of reports of trucks, vans, cars being stopped the allied troops and their owners later finding bombs in them) one eyewitness, Farhan Sudani, states he saw a missile dropped from a US helicopter.'It is one of Baghdad's monuments. We are losing a lot of our history every day', Ahmed Adul-Karim, who lives nearby is quoted as saying. 'It is one of our famous monuments, linked to Baghdad's modern history', said architect Haider Ghazala.

Iraq's bridges are its very arteries; they feed the country's heart and extremities. When they were bombed in 1991, almost all were rebuilt with extraordinary ingenuity, in spite of the embargo on materials. The Fourteenth of July Bridge, named to commemorate the 1958 revolution against the British (who had opened to doors for monopolies to plunder the oil wealth) was the last to be rebuilt. Iraqis had watched the complexities with baited breath, many thinking it could not be done. When it was, they flocked to Baghdad, from throughout the country, many lying on it to kiss the concrete.

The Roman processional and most of Babylon has been ruined by US and Polish troops, archaeological barbarians, as Ur, believed birthplace of Abraham. And who has the courage to travel in 'liberated' Iraq, to make an inventory of the destruction of the thousands of Iraq's other ochre and golden historical gems?

Today it is Kerbala, site of one of the two most revered Shia shrines, resting place of Imam Hussein Bin Ali and his brother Abbas who left their mark on Islamic history at the Battle of Tuff (622), Imam Hussein mercilessly slaughtered, who is believed to have died with a Koran in one hand and a sword in the other. His words: 'Death with dignity is better than a life of humiliation', have not only a deep resonance with his Shia followers, but throughout Iraq. Or indeed, would strike resonance with any invaded nation.

As I write they will be gathering the body parts. Before the invasion, suicide bombings were unheard of in Iraq. The 1990's had some car bombs in Baghdad, which bewildered Iraqis and it would seem were generated by former US darling Iyad Allawi's Iraq National Accord.

American spokespersons have a mantra: 'Al Qaeda'. But there was no Al Qaeda (anyway a CIA creation) in Iraq before the invasion. Has the most powerful army on earth no ability to control Iraq's borders? Saddam Hussein never had a problem.

Anyway, the US military itself has stated that only a minimal percentage of attacks are by foreign fighters and Iraqis have lived together for centuries. When a friend - and many others - said, just prior to the invasion: 'Let them come, we have been fighting invaders for centuries', she was talking about just that. Not Iraqis fighting Iraqis.

Would Sunnis attack Kerbala? During the siege of Falluja the people of Najaf and Kerbala travelled the perilous route north west, to take trucks of food, goods and medicines. Would they repay with this, or is there an enemy within, closer to the occupiers?'

Even in the Iran-Iraq war, our archaeological sites, our history and theirs were respected', said a near tearful archaeologist in 1991, referring to the indiscriminate destruction from the air of humanity's history and utter disregard for civilian life, throwing to the winds, then as now, every international convention and treaty on the rules of war.

It also happens to be a Zionist trait to destroy the ancient, the beautiful, the very historic soul of a nation and people, America's indivisible ally. Israeli Defence Force personnel and others, certainly came in with the US and British troops. Who else did? And remember the bomb which went off under a bridge in Iran's neighbouring province to Basra? 'This bomb has a British accent', said an Iranian government spokesman.

Maybe or may be not, but 'stuff happens', throughout the region - to quote Rumsfeld after the invasion's looting and decimation - that was not happening before 9th April 2003. British Forces (some of whom were caught in Arab dress with a carload of explosives last year, who were arrested and for whom the British demolished a police station to rescue) are due to hand over Kerbala to Iraqis later this month. They had to hand it back after invading it in 1915 too.

Over Easter the British and the Czech invaders in southern Iraq had a competition involving pulling fire engines to raise money for charity (the Czechs won) and raised £2.000 sterling. The charity was for their fellow injured service personnel in one of the richest countries on earth, the UK. Not for the maimed parents and children of southern Iraq for whose injuries they are responsible. It would be good to think they are winging their way up to Kerbala to donate it to the decimated as a parting gift and rushing the sort of aid that Najaf and Kerbala, inspite of poverty and deprivation, did to Falluja. No breath holding.

And WHO IS erasing Iraq's history?

APPEL DES TURKMENES IRAKIENS

APPEL DES TURKMENES IRAKIENS
AUX AUTORITES ET INSTITUTIONS POLITIQUES EUROPEENNES

Dr. Hassan Aydinli

SAMARRA IS A "SUNNI" CITY WITH A "SHI'ITE" SHRINE AT ITS HEART

(FLASH BACK)

By Merry FitzGerald
Belgium, 23rd February 2006.

I am filled with great sadness and anger at hearing that yet another mosque has been attacked and destroyed in Iraq. The Askari Mosque, (also called ‘Golden Mosque because of its golden dome) is sacred to both Sunnis and Shi’ite. For the Shi’ite it is an important symbol as it is the burial place of the 10th and 11th Shi’ite Imams (holy descendants of the Prophet): Ali al-Hadi and Hasan al-Askari.

The Shi’ite (twelvers) believe that Hasan al-Askari’s ‘occulted’ son: Muhammad al-Mahdi ‘al-muntadhar’(who disappeared in 260/874 in a super natural realm), the Twelfth and final of the Shi’ite Imams or Mahdi, (also called the ‘Hidden Imam’) will return to earth to bring an era of justice and peace, followed by the end of the world.

In the seventies I was fortunate to visit this ancient city of Samarra, which was the capital of the Abassid Empire under Caliph al-Mu’tasim (in the 9th century). From the top of the Malwiya (spiral minaret) which is the symbol of Samarra one has an excellent view over the entire city, it is quite impressive, like all historical sites in Iraq.

I recall that when I visited the Askari Mosque I was struck with amazement by its great beauty and by its atmosphere of peace and serenity.

Last year the Malwiya was damaged by American rockets and now the Golden dome of the Askari mosque has been destroyed!

The first question one should ask is: Who benefits from instigating and infuriating Shi’ite against Sunnis and vice-versa? Surely the answer is: Definitely not the Iraqis, for they do not want a civil war. They have suffered too much already and for too long! The US and the UK are directly responsible not only for the destruction of Iraqi religious sites (Sunni, Shi’ite and Christian), but for the destruction of the entire country. They conveniently hide behind the al-Zarqawi myth to commit their crimes. How much do they pay their mercenaries to carry out these crimes in order to ignite sectarian war?

There was no al-Qaida and no al-Zarqawi ‘terrorism’ in Iraq before the US, the UK and their accomplices invaded the country. There was no animosity between Shi’ite, Sunnis, Christians, Sabeans and Yezidis in Iraq before they invaded the country.

The US and the UK are directly responsible because they have illegally invaded a sovereign country and destabilized it. They have brought chaos and are responsible for killing over 1.5 million Iraqis (with their criminal economic sanctions and heavy bombings). They are responsible for stealing Iraq’s sovereign resources and for stealing 12 billion US$ (by Bremer). They are responsible for the elimination of Iraq’s academics, for imprisoning, torturing, raping, humiliating, maiming and killing thousands of innocent Iraqis, the enumeration of their evil deeds could go on and on…

There will be no healing of Iraq, no reconciliation, no peace, no reconstruction and no future while these gangsters occupy the country. The Iraqi people are demanding their immediate departure.

No doubt that when the US-UK are finally kicked out all the puppet/agents who have been put in place by the Anglo-Saxon occupiers will flee back to America and Britain. Shame on them! Shame on them for conspiring with the enemy, for having betrayed their country and for having participated in squandering its wealth! These ‘puppets’ have proven that they are incapable of running the country, hiding behind their masters’ fortifications in the so-called ‘Green Zone’ and the Iraqi people do not trust them. Graver still: their lack of leadership and total incompetence is putting the territorial unity of Iraq at risk.

Meanwhile, the Kurdish parties of Barazani and Talabani, with the help of the US and the Israelis, are implementing Zionist-inspired policies in the north of Iraq, to the detriment of the Turkmens, Arabs and Assyrians.

At this crucial moment, when the future of their country is at stake, it is to be hoped that Iraqis will rally together in order to avoid falling into the trap of a sectarian war and that they will unite their efforts to kick out their common enemy: the occupiers.

Iraqi Sunnis and Shi’ite rallying in Kut today (23rd February 2006) under the Iraqi flag, bring a much needed ray of hope.

THE BARZANI CHAMELEON

On September 11, 1961, Iraqi Kurds under the leadership of Mulla Mustafa Barzani, founder of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and father of the current Kurdish president Masoud Barzani, rose in rebellion against Iraq's central government. Kurds often portray the event as spontaneous.[1] It was not.

A declassified KGB document suggests Soviet involvement in the Kurdish rebellion was part of a Kremlin plan to disrupt Western interests in the Third World. The Kurds provided fertile ground for Soviet intrigue because of Barzani's ties to Soviet authorities.[2] After the collapse of the Mahabad Republic in Iran, Barzani took refuge in the Soviet Union. On July 29, 1961, KGB chairman Alexander Shelepin suggested to Nikita Khrushchev, the secretary general of the Soviet Communist Party, to have Barzani (code-named Ra'is, Arabic for president) "activate the movement of the Kurdish population of Iraq, Iran, and Turkey for creation of an independent Kurdistan." If successful, the rebellion could disadvantage not only the United States and Great Britain but also U.S. allies Turkey and Iran.[3] After the Kurdish rebellion began, the KGB sought to further exploit the situation:

P. [Peter] Ivashutin to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. September 27, 1961, St.-199/10c, 3 October 1961, TsKhSD, fond 4, opis 13, delo 85, ll. 1-4.

In accord with the decision of the CC CPSU of 1 August 1961 on the implementation of measures favouring the distraction of the attention and forces of the USA and her allies from West Berlin, and in view of the armed uprisings of the Kurdish tribes that have begun in the North of Iraq to:
1) use the KGB to organize pro-Kurdish and anti-[Abdul Karim] Kassem protests in India, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Guinea, and other countries; 2) have the KGB meet with Barzani to urge him to "seize the leadership of the Kurdish movements in his hands and to lead it along the democratic road," and to advise him to "keep a low profile in the course of this activity so that the West did not have a pretext to blame the USSR in meddling into the internal affairs of Iraq"; and 3) assign the KGB to recruit and train a "special armed detachment (500-700 men)" drawn from Kurds living in the USSR in the event that Moscow might need to send Barzani "various military experts (Artillerymen, radio operators, demolition squads, etc.)" to support the Kurdish uprising.[4]

While the Ivashutin document refers only to Barzani's relationship with the KGB in the run-up to and wake of the 1961 rebellion, other declassified material suggests ties between the Barzani family and Soviet authorities to have a long history.[5] In 1973, though, the KGB severed its relationship with Barzani after the Baath Party and Iraqi Communist Party formed a tenuous alliance and Baghdad established close military and economic ties with the Soviet Union.[6] Deprived of Soviet support, Barzani allied himself more closely with the United States, Iran, and Israel. However, in 1975, Henry Kissinger pulled the rug out from the Kurdish rebellion when he brokered a border and non-interference pact between Iran and Iraq. Mulla Mustafa Barzani took refuge in the United States where he died in 1979.[7]

How is this episode relevant today? Switching alliances is part of the Barzani family political culture, intertwining survival and power with Kurdish nationalism. Between 1980 and 1988, Masoud Barzani allied himself with Iran in its fight against Saddam, even as the revolutionary authorities in Iran turned their guns on Iranian Kurds. After long hostility to Turkey, in 1992, he allied with Ankara in its fight against the Kurdistan Workers' Party (Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan, PKK); in 1996, he allied with Saddam Hussein against rival Kurdish leader (and current Iraqi president) Jalal Talabani. In the wake of Iraq's liberation in 2003, Barzani has portrayed himself as a U.S. ally. For how long, though, remains unclear.
