The street, designed by the Ottomans in 1916 and modeled on Paris, has figured in much of Baghdad’s history: Sunnis and Shiites planned the overthrow of British rule in 1920 at Hayder Khana Mosque. A Communist uprising filled the street in 1948. Saddam Hussein began his political career there in 1959, in an assassination attempt on Abdul Kareem Qassim, the country’s first prime minister.
“Nothing happened in Iraq that Rasheed Street didn’t have a major role in it,” said Yaseen al-Nussayir, who wrote a book about the street.
On a recent afternoon, the crumbling facades of Rasheed Street bore only muted testimony to their past, when Iraq — flush with new money from oil in the 1950s — celebrated its wealth in the shops and theaters of its oldest street, where Western and Arabic architectural styles bumped shoulders in an optimistic glow of midcentury modernism. Windows are now broken or covered with dust; shutters hang limp from their hinges. At the city’s oldest cafe, men smoked hookahs on the sidewalk because there was no electricity inside.

15 Eylül 2004`te Amerikan güçleri, Telafer`e saldırmış ve çıkan olaylarda birçok masum Irak Türk’ü şehit edilmişti. Dönemin Dışişleri Bakanı ve Başbakan Yardımcısı Abdullah Gül, Telafer'deki saldırıların devam etmesi durumunda Türkiye'nin işbirliğinin sona erdirileceğini ABD'ye ilettiklerini belirterek, "Tabii ki sözde kalmayız, gerekirse üzerimize düşeni yaparız" demişti.Bu çıkışın ardından Amerika Telafer’deki saldırıyı durdurdu. Ondan dolayı Telafer’in en büyük caddesine Abdullah Gül ismi verildi.

Production alimentaire mondiale en 2009 : Chute catastrophique

Moyen Orient et Asie Centrale
Le Moyen Orient et l’Asie Centrale subissent la pire sécheresse connue de l’histoire récente. La production de céréales est à son plus bas niveau depuis des décennies. On estime que la production totale de blé dans cette zone est en baisse d’au moins 22 % en 2009. Du fait de la sécheresse généralisée, les capacités des lacs de barrage, des rivières et des nappes pour l’irrigation sont au plus bas. Les principales retenues d’eau en Turquie, Iran, Iraq et Syrie sont toutes à leur niveau le plus bas, ce qui nécessite des restrictions pour l’utilisation de ces réserves. En conséquence des pertes importantes affectant les récoltes, on s’attend à une pénurie significative de semences pour la saison 2010.
Irak
En Irak, pendant la période de croissance des céréales d’hiver, il n’y a pas eu de précipitations mesurables et des surfaces agricoles considérables n’ont tout simplement pas été ensemencées. La région du nord de l’Irak, où la pluie est la seule source d’arrosage, connaît cette année un véritable désastre agricole, avec une production de blé réduite de 80 à 98% par rapports aux chiffres habituels. Le USDA (US Department of Agriculture) estime que la production de blé totale de l’Irak en 2009 sera de 1,3 millions de tonnes soit une réduction de 45% par rapport à l’année précédente.
Syrie
La Syrie doit faire face à la pire période de sécheresse de ces 18 dernières années et l’USDA estime que la production totale de blé en Syrie en 2009 sera de 2 millions de tonnes, soit la moitié de celle de l’année passée. Au cours de l’été dernier, l’approvisionnement en eau a été interrompu autour de Damas et les habitants de la capitale ont dus s’approvisionner au marché noir. Ce problème est exacerbé par le manque de précipitations au cours de l’hiver.
Afghanistan
L’absence de précipitations a plongé l’Afghanistan dans la pire période de sécheresse de ces dix dernières années. Le USDA estime la production de blé du pays à 1,5 millions de tonnes pour 2008/09, en baisse de 60% ou de 2,3 millions de tonnes par rapport à l’année précédente. La production annuelle normale de blé du pays est de 3,5 à 4 millions de tonnes.

Jordanie
La sécheresse chronique de la Jordanie a empiré, sans aucune précipitation cette année. Le gouvernement a suspendu l’approvisionnement en eau des exploitations agricoles et réserve l’eau à l’alimentation humaine.
Les autres pays du Moyen-Orient et d’Asie Centrale affectés par la sécheresse sont les Territoires Palestiniens, le Liban, Israël, le Bangladesh, le Myanmar, l’Inde, le Tadjikistan, le Turkménistan, la Thaïlande, le Népal, le Pakistan, la Turquie, le Kirghizstan, l’Ouzbékistan, Chypre, et l’Iran.

Imagine yourself in Iraq or in the Middle East during the 1940s or ‘50s, or even earlier. There is peace. There is prosperity. Hustle and bustle. You go into a tea house to rest from the heat, to meet friends or just to smoke a narghile, a water pipe, or perhaps play a game of backgammon, to enjoy with your tea and relax.
This is what this sculpture, or Lowhah in Arabic, evokes. And indeed, that is how it was conceived

Baghdad:
#1: Five people were killed and 22 others wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in the eastern Baghdad district of Sadr City on Thursday, a local security source said. “The IED went off near a funerary gathering in Sector 42, Sadr City district, eastern Baghdad, leaving five people killed and 22 others wounded,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
#2: Three people were killed and eight others wounded on Thursday when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off in al-Zaafaraniya, southeastern Baghdad, a local security source said. “An IED went off near a Shiite funerary gathering in the area of Sa’eeda, al-Zaafaraniya neighborhood, southeastern Baghdad, killing three and wounding eight others,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
#3: One civilian was killed and four others were wounded in a roadside bomb explosion in eastern Baghdad on Friday, a police source said. “The bomb, planted by gunmen in al-Shamaiya region in eastern Baghdad, went off, killing a civilian and injuring four,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Karbala:
#1: An improvised explosive device went off near a Shiite procession of pilgrims visiting the holy city of Karbala for the Ashuraa but nothing was said about possible casualties, according to eyewitnesses on Thursday. “A blast targeted a Husseini procession in the area of Bab Baghdad on Maytham al-Timar street in Karbala city. The blast, based on initial information, was the result of an IED,” the Aswat al-Iraq news agency correspondent reported.
Twenty-two Shiite pilgrims were killed or wounded when three gas cylinders exploded in the holy Shiite city of Karbala on Thursday, a security source said. “Three gas cylinders that were used to prepare dinner meals for the pilgrims reviving the Muharram 10th anniversary, or Ashuraa, exploded near a Husseini procession, leaving a number of them killed or wounded,” the security source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
#2: A roadside bomb wounded four civilians in Kerbala, 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Baghdad on Thursday night, police said
Shirqat:
#1: Gunmen opened fire on a local pro-government militia checkpoint on Thursday night, killing one and wounding two others in Shirqat, 300 km (190 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
