A suicide bomber detonated his explosives inside a popular restaurant killing at least 55 people and wounding 120 others, police said.
According to a Kurdish official Arab tribal leaders were in the restaurant at the time of the attack, having lunch with members of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the party of Jalal Talabani.
They were due to attend a meeting with Talabani to discuss ways to defuse tensions among Arabs, Kurds and Turkmens in Kerkuk.
