Dear Dr. Aydinli,
As Chairwoman of the European Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights, I am writing in response to your letter concerning the situation of the Turkmen community in Iraq, which was forwarded to me by Professor BUZEK, President of the European Parliament, and which I have carefully considered.
As you are undoubtedly aware, the Subcommittee on Human Rights recently (on 5 December 2011) held a hearing on the human rights situation of Turkmen in Iraq, as it is clear that on a significant number of levels the Turkmens' human rights are precarious at best, a situation exacerbated by the lack of security which you refer to in your letter. At our hearing, we were pleased to welcome Mr. Hasan Özmen, representative in the Iraqi Parliament and of Turkmen ethnicity, who, together with Professor Stefan Wolff and Professor Ibrahim Sirkeci provided us with detailed information and a more comprehensive understanding of the current state of play. For your information, I include the link to the recording of the hearing below.
You can rest assured that the security and human rights of the Turkmen in Iraq are on the European Parliament's radar, and we continue to follow up on the situation closely, especially in the light of the increased volatility in the region since the withdrawal of foreign troops.
Thank you again for writing to the European Parliament.
Yours sincerely,
Barbara LOCHBIHLER
