PRESS RELEASE
Friday 30 May 2008

Seven year anniversary for Parliament Square peace protestor

Monday 2nd June will be the 7th anniversary of the start of Brian Haw's continuous protest against the Government's foreign policy on Iraq - against the economic sanctions that caused huge suffering to the Iraqi people, and against the invasion and occupation of the country.

To mark the seven years, Mr Haw will be fasting and praying from Sunday 1 June to Monday 2nd and is inviting others to join him. There will be a gathering in Parliament Square at 2pm on Sunday 1st June for Mr Haw's supporters.

Brian Haw has continued his protest every day and night since 2nd June 2001, despite attempts to silence him including the introduction of a ban on unauthorised protest around Parliament under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act in 2005.

In his determination to stand up for peace and justice, Mr Haw has gained considerable recognition and continues his vigil while many of those who sought to stop his protest are no longer in power. And in March this year the Government announced that the restrictions on protest around Parliament would themselves be repealed. [A]
